Description

The family Siphonorhinidae is characterized by a pyriform, subtriangular head that is not extended into a rostrum, devoid of macrosetae (Fig. 1 C). Head with discernable mouthparts, especially mandibles (Attems, 1938). Antennae bent between antennomeres 3 and 4, pits of sensory cones on articles 5 and 6 absent, only a field of sensilla basiconica present (Fig. 1 C). Containing 11 species grouped in four genera (Siphonorhinus, Illacme, Nematozonium and Kleruchus), distributed in California, South Africa and southeastern Asia (Jeekel, 2001).
