Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 166 - 173. Silvery in color except for front of head, interorbital area, dorsal part of upper jaw, and tip of lower jaw which are black (Ref. 2713).

Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 7300). Enters estuaries (Ref. 9563). Feeds on pelagic crustaceans (Ref. 27637); fishes, squids, urochordatans, and nematodes (Anisakidae) were found in the stomach of specimens caught off the coasts of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil (Ref. 56498).
