Opsarius maculatus can be distinguished from Barilius ardens, B. canarensis, B. malabaricus and B. bakeri by having 7½ branched dorsal-fin rays (vs. 10½-11½) and a body-depth about 5 times in standard length (vs. 3) (Ref. 100448).
