  • Oceania: Two isolated populations, Northern Territory coastal streams from Victoria River to McArthur River and Cape York Peninsula, Queensland north of about 15°S. Also recorded from central southern New Guinea (Ref. 5259, 2847).
  • Biology


    Found in streams, ponds, and swamps (Ref. 5259). Inhabits rivers and creeks flowing through rainforest, sometimes in stagnant pools or slowly flowing rivulets. Also occurs along the margins of swamps and lakes. Usually forms large aggregations that shelter among aquatic vegetation. The breeding season coincides with the onset of monsoonal spring rains (Ref. 44894). Feeds on micro-crustaceans, insects, small arachnids, fish and algae (Ref. 2847).
