Dorsal spines (total): 10 - 12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 22 - 27; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 27 - 32. Body translucent; median fin bases almost transparent. Confirm number of spines in anal fin; family account says there are none (RF).

Young specimens occur above large depths and almost all adult ones are caught with pelagic trawls at 30-130 m during trawling in the deep scattering layers (except one in the South China Sea where one was caught by a demersal trawl during daylight at 760-800 m). This rare species most likely belong to the migrating interzonal complex of pelagic species (Ref. 54802).
