Description


Diagnosed from congeners in Aegean and Black Sea basins by having the following characters: origin of anal fin about 1½ -2½ scales behind dorsal fin base; lateral line with 63-67 + 4 scales; anal fin with 13-15½ branched rays; 21-27 gill rakers (mode 25); ventral keel exposed for 8-12 scales in front of anus; head length 22-26% SL; predorsal length 55-58% SL; caudal peduncle length 18-21% SL, depth 2.0-2.5 times in length; and nuptial males with few, large tubercles (Ref. 59043).

  • Europe and Asia: Black Sea basin in Resowska (Turkey) and Veleka (Bulgaria) drainages. Shemayas from rivers of Bulgaria north to Kamtchya might belong to this species.
  • Biology


    Inhabits rivers and migrates to upper reaches of tributaries to spawn. Spawning takes place in riffle with heavy current on gravel bottom. Forages in the lower section of rivers, close to the surface (Ref. 59043).
