Prefers calm waters of inland creeks where it can be very abundant (Ref. 27188). May occur in back currents of cascades along with Ctenoloricaria fowleri, Leporinus despaxi, Hemiodopsis quadrimaculatus and Parodon guyanensis. Lingers over stony substrates along shallow banks (Ref. 35237). Spawns in a secret or hidden area. The males have harems. The male often joins in protecting the young if they are close to his cave or lair but it is mainly the females who care for the eggs and young (Ref. 12251).
